Re: Close call in Tarsus
Hi all:I think the only plausible explanation for everyone's behaviour in this story is that the letter was a fake, cooked up as soon as Alexander was ill by a spy in Persian employ, who hoped to kill or at least weaken him by convincing him not to take any medicine. But Alexander would have known P...

Hi G.A. -- Sure, no problem -- I figure by registering and thus allowing other registered users to see my email address, I'm fair game ;-)Love & peace,

Re: showcase created
Hi all:I think putting the copyright notice right above the "written by webmaster" line works very well -- "webmaster" is indeed neutral. Thanks again, Nick -- you *are* being a responsible editor ;-)Love & peace,

More suggestions
Hi Nick:I suggest a copyright notice at the beginning of each entry. No it won't stop people from stealing lines if they really want to, but it puts out a bit more of a declaration of ownership, and might discourage casual or inadvertent plagiarists. At the bottom of mine as it is as the moment, ther...

Excerpt word length limit?
Hi Nick:Just read my excerpt on the site, and it's nice to see it there, except for two things -- it's the *first* version I sent you, not the second, and the second is the correct one. (Sorry about the confusion.)Second -- and this is the reason I'm posting this to the forum rather than emailing pr...

Re: Showcase for Alexander books ?
Susan, I really like this idea, for several reasons. First, it's a way for us to tell each other, and the cyberworld, something about what we're doing. I for one am very curious about everyone else's premise. And as you say it might have a stimulating effect. Second, it will make the site even more ...

Re: Please take care
The way I sold my first novel: I already knew some published writers, I went to conferences and got to know people, I made contact with a very well-regarded editor and got her interested in my manuscript and then mentioned this to an agent who took me on. Alas, this editor was no longer in a positio...

How many people here are writing Alexander books?
Hi companions:I know Marcus is writing an Alexander novel, and Ruth one about the aftermath of his death -- now I'm curious as to how many more people here are doing similar. In a private message Sikander told me that he knows of seven people writing Alexander novels -- are they all here? (I'm also ...

From excerpts -- yecch
Hi Companions:I get enough of an idea just from excerpts on the publisher's site (it's small press) to give my verdict. The premise: our heroine, Ashley, signs up for a special program in which journalists are "beamed" back in time, for 20 hours at a time, to interview historical figures. H...

Re: 1 hour? -- continued
Alexander knew all about morale and the dynamics of routs, of course. He sensed from certain aspects of Darius's deployment, and from who knows what else (Spies? The grapevine? The tone of Darius's letters? That Darius wasn't tested as a fighting king?) that the Great King had a certain lack of conf...

Re: 1 hour?
Ancient battles were very different from modern ones, both for the obvious reason of weapons technology (hand-to-hand vs. firearms) and the less obvious logistical reasons (unless there was navigable water close, supplies had to be moved via pack-animal, meaning an army couldn't stay in a place with...

Re: Representation of Alexander
A friend and I are having something of a debate on the question of whether it was Philip II or III in Tomb II, and in aid of that I tracked down the Bartsiokas article in full: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/288/5465/511#RF3. You have to be registered on the Science magazine site to get ...

Re: Imagination Invention
Where do you start? The guy would be interested in *everything*. Art, science, history since his time (which I think would bring tears to his eyes in part, on a number of levels), war technology, transportation, cities, architecture... he'd want to see it all. Can you imagine what he'd make of the I...
