Sherlock Holmes.

Hi everybody, I was reading the comments on the forum regarding the books by Manfredi "Alexandros"- the general impression would seem to be abysmal- but the reasons didn't, to me, come clear. Some people criticised it strongly without having read it- which I think is the same as judging a ...

Re: The Iliad, Alex and Hephaestion.

Hello Marcus, I was pleased to receive your message. I obviously have some reading to do as I have read none of the books in the Masters Of Rome Series and I love the authoress. By the way- the other week I read your article about Philotas- which I found to be a concise, clear and excellent article ...

Re: The Iliad, Alex and Hephaestion.

Dear John, thanks for the info- I have read the account of Alexander's execution of Batis in several modern day biographies but didn't honestly know the source of the story. Maybe it is false- especially taking into consideration Alex's usual treatment of defeated leaders or perhaps after Alex's nas...

Re: The Iliad, Alex and Hephaestion.

Dear Rick, the Iliad is not everyone's cup of tea, it is an epic poem but I think that it is important to read not only books about Alexander but the actual things that he read himself- Xenophone is another author Alex was fond of. Anyway, nice hearing from you, Dean.

Re: The Iliad, Alex and Hephaestion.

Dear Susan, just a quick note- regarding my message yesterday- I feel, as I mentioned, that "just a book" such as the Iliad- could be of immeasurable influence in somebody's life- the bible, written thousands of years ago still influences people around the globe- and it is "just a boo...

Re: The Iliad, Alex and Hephaestion.

Dear Linda, I appreciate your comments and message. Maybe I didn't express myself clearly when I tried to explain what I meant while talking about the effect of the Iliad or Homer on Alexander's life. First I didn't mean that Alex thought that he physically was Achilles reincarnated- that would be r...

The Iliad, Alex and Hephaestion.

I am quite a newcomer to the forum and was reading the article by Jeanne Zimmerman on this site regarding Alex's relationship with Hephaestion. I say "relationship" rather than sexuality because I think theirs was a bond based much more on love and understanding rather sex. First Hephaesti...

Re: Porus - Defeated?

Dear Dr Pal. It is a pleasure to read a message from such a well-informed individual as yourself, who has taken into account sources that I was not aware of- it seems that the whole "Porus" controversy seems to be quite a sticking point- after my asking the initial question Porus-defeated? ...

Re: Arrian/Curcio on the internet?

Dear Marcus, I would love to be able to buy the books unfortunately where I live, in the Canaries, there are few English books to buy, nevermind classics dating back so long ago- and thankyou for letting me know the correct spelling of Curtius- I've only ever seen the name in its Spanish form. Regar...

Arrian/Curcio on the internet?

Am very interested to know if anyone knows of any website where I can find fragments or a complete version of Arrian's or Curcio's writing.
Cheers!

Re: that knot

Dear Marcus,
in your reply you mention "primary sources", could you be a bit more precise and fill me in as to what exactly are the main "primary sources"
Thanks and all the best,
Dean.
