Hi aleksandros, The Pothos article regarding Parmenion states, Outside the major battles Parmenion’s main role was largely to secure the supply lines and take charge of the army’s supply train. While Alexander went gallivanting along the coast of Asia Minor the old general took the baggage train and...

Oh! I had forgotten how Nike was shown on the back too. Twice in one victory medal isn't bad, I guess. I'll try linking to the book page too. It works for me, but it might or might not work for the rest of the world. Here it goes: http://books.google.com/books?id=mNEEAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover...

Vergina, Agreed. If you read my previous post on the state of the US primary educational system, you know how I feel about our ability to learn from history. Sadly, until that, more basic, problem is solved... foreign cultures and marvels of the past will be little more than a curiosity--and, proba...

Nemesis would be an interesting goddess to carve onto a victory medal. I hadn't even considered her before, but now that you mention it, the possibility is certainly there. But then there is the flip side to who is being humbled in this medal. Whether it's Nike, Nemesis, or another goddess, the part...

OK, forgive me for playing the Devil's Advocate here... 8) I think many of us are all too quick to forget that we are not so different from the many people we admire from the past. Silly pop music and Emmys versus Nobel prizes and such? I think we're forgetting that men such as Socrates, Aristotle,...

It's amazing how little people think nowadays. You would imagine that as time goes on, our civilizations would hopefully become more intelligent. While it is true that we have made many advancements in technology, they seem to be a double-edged sword. While it would be hypocritical for me to say man...

Yes, it does seem to be strange that the woman figure is carrying a man. Especially in a victory medal, I would imagine Philip II would want his face to be the most important aspect. A bit humbling to say Nike lifted you into victory. I still feel like it's Nike, but I can't be sure. It's much too e...

I hate to say it and it's painful, but my daughter informed me that pretty much the whole class said learning about Greece was "boring" . I know that all of us here find ancient history exciting and it really bothers me that more people don't view it the same way as us. How can any...

I have seen the victory medal of Philip II at Tarsus many times, but have never stopped long enough to consider who or what the winged person is. Since you mention a god, my first guess would have to be Nike (who I commonly picture as Winged Victory of Samothrace). After all, it is a victory medal.

Stone took a lot of liberties in his movie in general, and that's fine. After all, it is his movie, and he never claimed it to be completely factual. I personally would have like him to either go all the way with Hephaestion and/or Bagoas, or not hint at it at all. The hinting left me, and others, q...

Alexander's Conquest - The Game

What better way to relax and spend the holidays than a little game based on Alexander the Great? It's a bit corny, childish, and has a few incorrect facts, but hey? Why not give it a try? It's called "Alexander's Conquest" and is made by The History Channel. A few of the questions are focu...

D's? That is quite disappointing. I'm very glad your daughter scored so highly. Both of you should be very proud. However, the fact that the majority of the class didn't even pass is quite disturbing. I am hoping that it was because they didn't have time to study or they were just having a bad day, ...

I have to do some proud parent bragging. My daughter took her Greek history test last week and just gave me the graded paper and she got 94% A. This short course they took covered Sparta, Athens, Macedonia, Mycenaeans and the war with Persia. She got the highest grade in her class. She watches the ...

It certainly is a shame that ancient history isn't being covered as thoroughly as it should be. Especially, as some people mentioned, in countries with so many resources and abilities to teach so much. I'm not going to get into the politics of the "War in Iraq" but look how quickly we inv...
