Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Oh, certainly not my ideas being put forward - I just thought it interesting to post the Hermitage description in case anyone wasn't aware of it. I'm certainly sceptical of just what was being held by the Hermitage's 'Cora'. I'm totally at a loss with the Amphipolis caryatids. About the only thing I...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Perhaps you mean a Kore? That just means a Greek maiden sculpture (usually archaic in style). It is a general term not relevant to whether she was a priestess. It is not clear what she was holding. It seems lost and substituted. Best wishes, Andrew No, I did mean Cora (old style as it's taken direc...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Just out of interest, doesn't the Hermitage identify the figure with Bacchus as Cora rather than a priestess? And she's holding a sheaf of corn (?) rather than being empty handed, at least to the best of my knowledge from what has been reported, as the caryatids at Amphipolis are?

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

The Huffington Post series of articles read like a bad parody of what Lafantzis suggested some time ago regarding aspects of the mound perhaps reflecting aspects of Alexandria. Whether Lefantzis will be proven correct with his idea of there being a link is another matter again. If that is a fourth d...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

Thank you for your comments. I'll pass them on in Livejournal. Zebedee, thanks very much for the link to the sounding map. If the entrance to chamber 3 is only 10 m from the entrance, and those are 25m squares, the entrance is very close to the retaining wall, so it seems very unlikely that H1 is c...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

I am a bit confused. The original reports suggested that there were 3 chambers, which I took to mean that there were 3 burial chambers. However, the latest press reports seem to be refering to what is beyond the lintel as chamber 3 ie the space between the sphinxes and the caryatids is chamber 1 an...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

I was just hoping for Aristotle, a son by concubine and a great nephew. With their complete works preserved. I'll be disappointed won't I? :D To me, there's a lot of Athenian elements to what has been uncovered so far and that would plausibly fit in with the dates being suggested. Very early for som...
