Re: The Kasta tomb Amphipolis - not a "Macedonian" tomb?

The pic I posted of Heuzey's tomb also clearly shows a facade. :) But it does also indicate that multiple chambers aren't unknown in Macedonia at the time period. Absolutely, as we both know, the absence of a facade is quite odd - but only within a specific time period. The first tomb without a faca...

Re: The Kasta tomb Amphipolis - not a "Macedonian" tomb?

Playing devil's advocate. ;) Are we sure that the form of the tomb now is the form of the 'original' tomb? We know that this tomb had phases of development/decoration after the late 4th century marble construction work. What about before? eg As many have noted, the entrance stairs are curiously cram...

Still following developments, especially with Lefantzis doing some talks about it. :)

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I'm afraid the 'clues' given establish only that both 'Juno' and Persephone are female and divine. As Alexias has already noted, uncertainty over who precisely the Etruscan terracotta represents doesn't alter the fact it's of a mature woman (hence 'Juno') rather than a young woman (such as Persephon...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Looking at the construction of the cist grave itself is actually quite interesting. Kyriakou has a few interesting essays posted up on her academia profile, and this one could help a little with getting to grips with what could reasonably be assumed to be a 'typical' cist grave burial for the richer...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Should really contrast with the arm shape Helepolis compares. It's a lovely bronze. It's 3rd/2nd century BC and from Alexandria. Currently at the Walters Art Museum. Here's another angle. http://s32.postimg.org/8p0ue2yrp/alexander.jpg If you notice the finger extended on the hand. Compare with anoth...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

hi Zebedee, yes at the current state it seems it is floating in the air or at a different level behind the male figure but we dont actually have a complete picture of the background The background is even less clear than the foreground, for sure! One thing with the horse you have there is that it d...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Hi Helepolis, would be odd to have a horse's head so far in the background behind a centaur, yeah. Does seem to be something happening over the shoulder, I agree. Not really sure on what though. :D The thing it most reminds me of is a mythological figure (several spring to mind) carrying a cornucopi...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

No, it is deduction from firm facts. How would you fill the space between the roof of the cist tomb and the floor of chamber 3 please? How would you explain the fact that the bones were found mixed in with a metre depth of soil? Do you actually prefer the sealer-mixer scenario: somebody standing th...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

So you're guessing? Because that's not evidence for what you're claiming 'clearly' happened. And I suppose that too would be my point on there being 'issues' with some ideas. They're built on guesswork and assumptions which should have evidence to support them, but the evidence is (at least so far) ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

What evidence is there to show that the cist grave was filled with earth, backfilled with the same earth, and then that was sealed over with the sand fill? Genuinely new to me, so absolutely fascinated to learn that there is evidence to show that.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Assuming 'simultaneous' is in proximity rather than time (not sure how one could prove that to a reasonable degree), double inhumation and cremation burials in cist graves are uncommon but found in places like Thesprotian Epirus during the Hellenistic period. These aren't monumental tombs however. S...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Interesting they're still not quite sure themselves then about a coffin or kline. Certainly no hint of anything above ground in which to place bodies, so far at least, either. Tomb 3 at Aghios Athanasios was a glass and ivory inlaid wooden kline, yeah. The suggestion there is the body was upon it be...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Why would anyone dig a coffin shaped cist grave and then have a cremation burial at one end? What are the precedents for mixed cremation and inhumation burials at the same time? For the same reason they constructed a cist grave of 3.23 m long - the longest ever found. I assume we do not know many p...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I've been away from this post on the forum for a while and am definitely not up to date on the many posts.. But do we know yet what was inside the tomb? Who was inside it? The most complete official version is by Corso, and is found here: http://www.archaeology.wiki/blog/2016/03/21/sculptures-tumul...
