Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipol

We call the 9th century AD people Slavs, rather than slaves (douloi), I know you won't take the correction the wrong way; yes, and there are the Ostrogoths in the fifth century and the Bulgars, They were probably not as destructive as the so-called civilised peoples make out, though, the Vandals we...

Re: Tactike theoriai – manuals or philosophy

Sorry, Nikas failed to note your previous contribution which Leo clearly took from the same family of tracts as the three that have come down to us; the discussion of the length of the sarissa is identical even down to the note that the ones actually used are shorter than the theoretical maximum. T...

Re: Tactike theoriai – manuals or philosophy

Also of possible interest: "These are the kinds of countermarches named by the ancient writers. They add that there are three ways of executing each of them. In the first we place the phalanx in front of its old position and turn its front around looking toward what had been its rear. They enti...

Re: Tactike theoriai – manuals or philosophy

By no means am I getting involved in this debate, I share this simply as somewhat interesting in light of the subject(s) at hand: 34. The Macedonian phalanx was a formation that appeared irresistible to the enemy because of its system of lining up. At the moment of close combat, as the battle line b...

Re: Tactike theoriai – manuals or philosophy

Correct me if I am wrong but the Byzantine manuals fall into the class of practical instruction don't they? I have not ever read them, myself. I suppose one ought to mention 'De Rei Militari' by Vegetius too, a fourth century AD plea for a return to old Roman discipline. My apologies, i missed this...

Re: Tactike theoriai – manuals or philosophy

I would not class either as part of the same tradition; Aeneas Tacticus did write extensively on the subject, sadly we only have his book on defending a besieged city; Onasander, has a special place in my heart; when i went for my interview at Nottingham University and I mentioned thet I was intere...

Re: Alexander the Great: Beginning the Campaign

Hi! It's been a few months since I've been charmed by the life of Alexander the Great. I have a few books on him including Philip Freeman's biography on him (the first book she read), I have Plutarch's Life of Alexander, one by Paul Cartledge as well as a book stating his military profile...but I'm...

Re: New book, critique of the Alexander the "Monster".

So the "King's Peace" wherein Sparta, for the second time, had sold the Greeks of Asia down the Euphrates for empire in Europe and the Aegean. Several reiterations of this koine eirene (common peace) would be struck under all three main powers all with the same result: the hegemon (and al...

Re: Mystery Alexander quote solved?

Which makes much better sense, for he hardly 'conquered Greece' - that had been achieved, and the subsequent system of alliances/federation set courtesy of the aftermath of Chaeronea. It also fits in with what Alexander actually did on learning of the outbreak of rebellion by Thebes - a very rapid ...

Re: Alexander (and the Greeks) do North America...

Again the tyranny of distance sees Oz miss out. For those in North America though... http://canada.greekreporter.com/2013/08/02/alexander-the-great-in-u-s-canada/ I saw something about this on FB this morning. Looks as if it will be rather good. Don't feel too put-out, Paralus - the distance is a b...

Re: Have archaeologists discovered the grave of Alexander?

Ha! I was just about to post that very link! I'd like to see some more dating evidence before even hazarding a guess, to be honest. I very much doubt it's Alexander. What intrigues me is that it is near Amphipolis, rather than anywhere near Aegae. I agree. It would be interesting to see how they ca...

Have archaeologists discovered the grave of Alexander?

Well, of course they won't there, but that makes one wonder, any other candidates that may fit?
