There were found also many findings near the burial ground of Aiane. It appears the archaeological team of Menteside found 243 new graves in the area with a large amount of female golden jewellery. I havent found anything in the net yet but their presentation will be next Thursday in Thessalonike du...

Re: Help with a Greek Word

Hi All, While not Alexander-related, I was wondering if I could get a little help in coming up with a word in ancient Greek? In English, it needs to mean some permutation of 'the dwellers beneath'. I understand 'troglodyte' (in Greek) is fairly close, but I'm trying to avoid using that word because...

One thought that strikes me is to wonder how much it mattered precisely where in Macedonia you came from. Just how tribal the army was, and how important it was to the men to be commanded by someone from their own area. Perhaps Perdiccas, Seleucus and Craterus came from areas that produced good inf...

I got 9 out of 10 - the Cassander question threw me - and I'm not sure that I agree that Thessaloniki became Macedons capital. I guesss it doesn't really matter anyhow.
As a matter of fact i had the same thought about Thessalonica. I dont think it became capital prior to Roman era.

Hesiodus makes Macedon son of Zeus and Thyia, daughter of Deucalion and Hellanicus makes Macedon a son of Aeolus.

Got 9/10 and lost the one with Thessalonike. The right answers are in the bottom, right before the date.

Re: Kassandros official title

ruthaki wrote:I've been trying to locate the exact title for Kassandros (after Anitapter made him Polyperchon's second-in-command.) I've come up with Vizier. But is there another more accuarte Macedonian title? Thanks for your help.
Antipater had appointed his son "Chiliarch".

Macedonians wore a Phrygian helmet which eventhough it was similar in general form to the Thracian helmet, yet they were different. "Herodotus recorded the Macedonian account that Phrygians emigrated into Asia Minor from Thrace" "(stating that the Illyrians lived beyond Macedonia and...

I told you. Thrace & Macedon are both Thracian states, not Greek. Alexander the great had many Thracians in his army, so it were the Thracians who abolished the Persians. I am sorry. Simply by Telling sth, doesnt make it true. Alexander having a certain number of Thracians into his army, doesnt...

Where are you getting that Macedon was a Thracian province from? Just look on geographic maps which still have all the old names, I've seen it so many times that Thrace is situated North of the Greek states. It's right next to the Black sea, other than that I can give you a quote from wikipedia; &q...

But the one I have been searching for left me with the strong impression that the injunction against rape was part of standing orders. It concerned two (I think it was two) soldiers who were hanged for the crime of rape. However, that Alexander ever, even once, forbade rape, supports the view that ...

Well, I would like to see some examples of Amyntor from Macedon prior to Alexander. Not being huffy, but would like to see them. And perhaps the exact wording of the SEG 31.636 and it's context? Please. I have many of them online bookmarked, but not that one. So your interpretation of the Kolophon ...

Well, take gander at Heckel's Who Who. There's nary an Amyntor to be found, but countless Amyntas'. If i am not mistaken this specific book contains biographies limited solely to the period of Alexander and doesnt cover before. I dont doubt at the time of Alexander, Amyntas was a widely spread name...

Callisto, sorry If I wasn't clear. Amyntor and Hephaistion are non-Macedonian names. Hephaistion stands alone, Amyntor is Amyntas in Macedon. No problem at all. I was just being curious. I wouldnt say Amyntor is a non-Macedonian name either. The ending -or was common in Macedonia, Epirus and Thessa...
