Re: Again Philotas

This was an excellent in-depth reply. I agree with your comments. He was a chosen 'companion' but that was mainly because his father was one of Philip's top generals so therefore he was already part of the 'court'. His actions later showed a betrayal of Alexander. No doubt, if Kassandros had been al...

Re: STRABON

It's pretty well established, I believe, that there was Persian money (and Athenian) behind Philip's assassination even though it was also blamed on Olympias. (Sure, maybe...she hated him!) Demosthenes was publishing a lot of pamphlets against the Macedonians, especially Alexander. But look how he r...

Re: The Fall of Alexander the Great's dynasty

I have taped it for my archives. An interesting look at parts of the country that are no longer available to us.

Re: The Fall of Alexander the Great's dynasty

I couldn't agree with you more. And believe it or not, his spirit is still very 'alive' in Macedonia!

Re: Mieza

Thanks, Marcus. I've been to Pella twice before but now they've done more excavations on the palace area I need to go again. I wasn't sure if I could do the two in one day, probably not as I use the local buses. I was just trying to avoid having to stay too many days in 'Saloniki. I've been there so...

Mieza

I'm heading up to Mieza in a few weeks. It's one of the last "Alexander" sites I must visit as it figures in the final chapters of my novel. Anyone been there? (I hope it's open to the public now.) Is the best way to go on a day-trip from Thessaloniki? And could I manage Pella and Mieza on ...

Re: who knows

Who knows? He was apparantly rendered speechless. They did say that his body emitted a sweet fragrance though (didn't smell like burned meat! LOL)

Re: Again Philotas

He was one of the "companions" of Alexander, the elite group who were chosen to be closest to him throughout his youth and when he became King.

Re: request - what we need

This is a great site.I just found it and I am enjoying it immensely. If you look at my website http://www.dreamwater.org/ruthaki you will see it follows an "alexander" thread. Included (page 2) is an article previously published in the Montreal Gazette which you may be interested in. If so...

Re: Sources

I understand that a lot of the royal records were destroyed by Kassandros after he seized control (after murdering Alexander's family members); And I believe some Sources were lost in the fire at Alexandria. I wonder how many fragments have or will show up? (Such as the fragments of Sappho's work th...

Re: Olympias and state visits

Most of the time the women were not at state functions such as symposiums (unless they were heteiras) but it seems the Olympias for sure 'entertained' the Egyptian shaman Nectenabo when he came to Macedonia because of the many stories (legends?rumors?myths?)about how she was involved with him in mor...

Re: What did Alexander look like?

We can only go by the many sculptures of his face, many of which were by the famous sculptor Praxiteles. I cringed when Richard Burton played the 18 yr old Alexander in that old film of the '50's. I've heard talk of Tom Hanks. NO! While writing my my novel I try to 'tag' the characters with living p...
