Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

You can include french too it's ok, since i am currently studying translation, and part of this is searching and researching everything that is new to me. Architecture has a lot of terminology, but that's the challenge! I knew what faux tiles means, however i didn't exactly understand your question ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

What do you mean faux tiles? They are individual blocks of marble with tiles sculpted on them as in Andrew's picture.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I think this was one of the arguments prof. Mavroyiannis used in the part of the video that i tried to translate some pages back, along with the pebble mosaic, and some other things. It seems that most of the findings point to the last quarter of the 4th century, and maybe closer to the beginning of...

Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

Xenophon, some of the towns and villages retained their ancient name, and some others were renamed during the Othoman occupation. The modern Thetidion is not in the same place as the ancient, but it got it's name from the ancient town that was nearby, and is considered to have been a bit to the sout...

Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

I haven't read all the sources, but you are making the assumption that they continued west. Polybious says that they first were to engage at Pheres, which is modern Velestino, but then both armies went west, going almost parallel and eventually Phillip made camp at Melambion which is north of Skotou...

Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

From a greek blog post about some features in Thessaly, we find this about Mavrovouni(Karantao): Σε αντίθεση με άλλους συγγραφείς ο Stahlin υποστηρίζει ότι η μάχη του 197 π.Χ. έγινε στις πλαγιές , ανάμεσα στις Φερές και το Χαλκωδόνιο.(Πολύβιος 18,19,4, Livius 33,6,4,Ussing 92,Bursian 69 ) Translatio...

Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

Here is the mountain that was probably used in the video as the site for the battle.

I think it's Mavrovouni as seen from Thetidio somewhere in the SW.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Broneer also dated the lion when it was first found, at the last quarter of the 4th century. There are a lot of evidence that support the dating, most of which have been discussed here and gepd and Andrew have given a nice summary for most of them. It has been clear for some time that the team has n...

Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

All in all, I think that any serious proposal has to show that a particular location had some feature which could have been called the Dogs' Heads in antiquity. And that is the problem, that none of these hills look like dogs heads. Unless they had a different shape at that time, which is possible....

Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

Ok, after doing some research, i saw the proposed site by Hammond, which has rather flat hills. Of course taking into account that even small hills could be rough for battle, it may be the site. However none of these hills are high or even remotely similar to dog heads. Thus the name must have anoth...

Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

Apart from the fact that it would be unusual to have a single name for two sets of hills separated by a pass, none of the ridges/hills to the West of the Palaepharsalus/Krini pass remotely resemble a 'Dog Head' type feature from any angle that I can see, whereas the single hill to the east of Palae...

Re: The Probable site of Kynoskephalae battlefield 197 BC

According to a brief research that i made, the locals say that the mountain Karantao (Mavrovouni) was Kynoskephalae, which is south of Larisa and next to the village Myra. However i haven't read everything that was posted, so i don't know if it has been mentioned. I will do further research and post...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

I think that what Mr Lefantzis said is that it is elliptical in the vertical and not the horizontal axis, meaning that the blocks at the north side are a bit higher than the blocks at the south side. This does not affect the length. The peribolos is almost a perfect circle. At least this is what i r...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

According to a work in progress by Dimitris Dendrinos, the total number of marble slabs that surrounded the perimeter wall were 365.44 and the days of the year as calculated with modern means is 365.22. The architect probably had the slabs sculpted in a way that 365 of them fit in a 360 degree circl...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

From Protothema http://en.protothema.gr/amphipolis-clash-between-excavation-team-and-renegade-geologist/ “Mr. Evangelos Kambouroglou took part in the excavation for ten days at the most. He was not one of our main associates,” the archaeologist said, adding that the geologist made several mistakes a...
