Re: A Novel About Alexander?
Hi, ness -- What Derek already told you is painfully true. I've got several good friends who've been publishing in SFF for years, and not only is it hard to break in, the rules change constantly, and the ebook market has upended everything. The midlist is dead, and it's harder and harder to market b...

I was going to ask where that was. Alexias, did the placard ID it other than place and date?

Re: Pella c1910
Cool. And as for the mounds, hard to say. There's no indication where exactly this is, whether over the current archaeological site, the western cemetary, or where the current modern town is. I assume the latter, but who knows?

re: nicknames ... it's correct that many English speakers look to a shortening of names, and of course, many modern Greek names have shortened versions, but not all of them are. Sometimes we may know the nickname. Apparently "Kraton" was the nickname for "Krateros." "Alekos&...

Re: Dancing with the Lion (novels on the young ATG)
I have an update. I now have release dates for the novels. Note, these could *change* between now and then. But: Dancing with the Lion: Becoming will be out officially at midnight on Monday, May 6th, with an early release on Riptide's own platform at midnight Saturday, May 4th. Dancing with the Lion...

Re: Alexander in the "Porus" series
I'll admit, Rohit doesn't look like my idea of Alex. I tend to favor the Azara herm, with its much longer-round face, and imagine him stockier. But he's not bad, and I'm intrigued by the series. Plus a good actor can overcome a difference in looks. (And yeah, Hephaistion isn't at all like I think of...

Re: Plutarch quotes
"Apparently a jib at Alexander's divine pretentions. Alexander therefore had previous grievances against Callisthenes before proskynesis or the Pages conspiracy." Just a quick correction--this is actually in reference to the proskynesis affair, as it involves the earlier supper part arrang...

Re: The Persian Empire A History by Lindsay Allen
Terminology and misunderstandings related to Greek (mis)assumptions about ANE courts are notorious. "Cup Bearer" was actually a *military* title at the Assyrian court. That's just one example. And I still think Bagoas has been anachronistically elevated as a result of Mary Renault, and the...

Re: "Desperately Seeking Hephaestion" (Elizabeth Hopkinson)
Alexias, as I collect Alexander fiction, do you know of a way I could get a copy of that book? Perhaps by contacting her?
Actually, never mind. On her Livejournal, it looks like the book has been withdrawn. That's too bad.

"Desperately Seeking Hephaestion" (Elizabeth Hopkinson)
So I was poking about online last night, as part of writing up an abstract for a panel on this year's annual AAH (Association of Ancient Historians) meeting at Emory in Atlanta, and I came across a short story that I found completely charming, and original in its approach. It's short, so a quick rea...

Re: Amphipolis article
Hephaistion (with that spelling) is primarily an Attic-Ionic spelling. It's not present in Macedonia before "our" Hephaistion (nor in Doric/Aeolic areas, which would arguably include Macedonia). Haphaistion/Haphestion is an alternative, but it fades away in the early Hellenistic period, wh...

I'm very intrigued by this. Eretria has old links to Macedonia, via Methone. Thanks much for the post and links.

Re: Fire from Heaven
Oliver Stone flat stole the scene at the beginning, with ATG in mom's room and Philip coming in. That is found nowhere in the sources. Renault invented it. There were quite a few unacknowledged steals in the movie. The requirement of earth and water comes from Herodotus. As for Hephaistion being a d...
