Re: Book on Greeks in India and
There's an on-line learning ancient greek site, hosted by the University of Lampeter at http://www.lamp.ac.uk/classics/mathos/ that might interest you. I don't recall where you are based, but the Joint Association of Classical Teachers (http://www.jact.org/) can sometimes put you in touch with langu...

Re: Gates of Hell by Paul C. Doherty (historical fiction)
Marcus, I too was unimpressed by Doherty's previous Alexander novels - & even more so by the ones published under the pseudonym of Anna Apostolou. Having received the Halikarnassus one to review for the Joint Association of Classical Teachers' Journal, I was polite as I could be, given the book ...

Re: ancient greek language classes
Linda - don't know if you'll ever get this as your message has long gone from the active screen, but my contact who runs the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies (given lodgings by the University of London) rates the OU course highly. He did teach Ancient Greek (& Latin) himself, transl...

Re: Descendants of Alexander?
Surely you must have come across the slash/site on which there is a story about Xena & Gabrielle meeting Philip II? Gabrielle tells a toddler Alexander stories about how Xena fights... :) Can't recall the url, but think Tim Spalding lists it... Dear me, how I waste my time, when I should be awar...

Re: Lake Loudias
Smitty - last time I was in Pella there were new signs to the "harbour" excavations, which would have been on the shore of Lake Loudias. I didn't visit them - mea culpa - it was p*****g down with rain (unlike Ruthaki, who has Helios on her side, I always visit Vergina/Pella/Mieza in horren...

Re: Mieza, Aristotle's Cave
Ruth - I too managed to visit Dodoni again last spring - amid a thunderstorm - quite astounding! Did you get to Dion? In May I found they've uncovered a bit there since I last visited about 4 years ago - the temple where Alexander would have sacrificed before settling off for the east (by the odion,...

Re: Aristotle's Classroom
Jan, there's some information (& a picture) of the School of Aristotle at Isvoria (Mieza) on the Hellenic Culture website (http://alexander.macedonia.culture.gr/2/21/211/ 21117n/e211qn03.html). There are extensive caves that have been made into dwellings, and signs of a covered stoa, above the r...

Re: HELLO FROM GREECE
Good to hear from you in Greece, Ruthaki, - & glad you made it this time to Mieza. I was there in May (damp & chilly - but I didn't go for the weather!), and was pleased to see that they'd tidied up the site a bit - although the disabled access ramp looked a bit like a roller-coaster ride to...

Re: Alexander The Great: A Musical In Conception
Nick, Marcus, I have doubts in the musical side - bit mid-range heavy, isn't it? No coloratura soprano, no basso profundo, no counter-tenor? (But I guess you have to work with voices you know you can get.) And a chorus of Macedonian/Persian soldiers could either turn out to resemble the nastier bits...

Re: Beefing-Up?--Could Care Less
Coming back to the UK from Athens on Sunday night via British Airways, I was given a free Daily Mail - in which was a picture of Pitt on the 'phone while filming the new Troy pic. Costuming courtesy Xena + Terminator... Bit different from, say, the Denda armour in Naplion museum, which I *think* is ...

Ah, try http://1stmuse.com/frames/efest.jpg. Never get your hand shut in a sash window - with no feeling in your fingers, letters get missed out when typing. So no wine this time, merely silly disability (& not checking mail before posting :) )...apologies.... Hopefully, this will save Marcus's ...

Re: Gardens of Midas
The Gardens of Midas seem to have been all round (modern) Naoussa, taking in the foothills of Mt Vermion. The (reputed) School of Aristotle is near modern Kopanos, about 7km from Naoussa - there's also a theatre excavated there - & the modern village is probably built over remains of a town. Clo...
