A cup as a testimony of a great drinking night

Hi all Here is a link I think is interesting. http://rogueclassicism.com/2014/07/31/cup-used-by-perikles/ The two names Arrifron and Perikles, the two brothers does not leave much room for doubts about the cup in question being used by the great man of Athens himself (just enlarge the cup photo and ...

Re: Leuktra: Philip inspired by indecisve draw?

I add a subtitle to my reply "The Beotarch Xenocrates deserved an epigram (after being dead of course)..." As to numbers, I have already referred to the general consensus on that score, and outlined the reasoning, namely some 10,000 or so Lakedaemonians and 1,000 cavalry; and 7-9,000 Boeot...

Theotimos fought well

In 457 BC the battle of TanagRa took place between the Athenians and their allies (14.000 in total) , the cavalry of Thessaly, versus the Spartan army. During the battle the cavalry of Thessaly defected to the Spartans and tus the Athenian army was defeated (Thuc I 108). The history behind the fight...

Amazing news!

Hey all Check out this link http://www.lifo.gr/now/culture/49877 An ancient graffiti was recently found in the island of Astipalea that dates back to the 6th century BC and it is believed to be written by the garisson in charge of the island's protection. We can therefore be sure that Nikasitimos f....

Re: Tactike theoriai – manuals or philosophy

Excellent pictures, Pauline, could you just clear one thing up, what is the modern name for Kreusis? The modern name of Kreusis is Livadostrata, a name the Katalanoi gave to the area and it means "riva d' ostria- the side of the southern wind" Also, Paralus, thank you for the Delphi photo...

The Lykeion of Aristotle

Hi all The Lykeion where Aristotle taught when he returned to Athens after Alexander's education was finished, has been dug up for over a decate in the center of Athens. As the information stands on the site confirm, it is hard to appreciate from the humble remain of the building the importance of t...

Alexander trivia

Hi all It's common knowledge that one of Alexander's pet dogs was called Peritas (but I do not remember the source for this). There is a late epigraph, on the 5th verse of which the name is mentioned (which by the way is a name for a person not a pet) along with a commentary that states that the nam...

The new Heraklion city museum, Crete.

Hi all Just before I cast my vote.... http://www.lifo.gr/team/omorfia/48361 The msueum in the link above was closed for 8 years for renovation purposes. Needlsess to talk about the importance of the artifacts it pays host to, most from Minoan Crete. Among those are some I haven't seen myself: The ti...
