Re: What if Alexander had lived?
Xenophon, you said : The factors that defeated Pyrrhus and Hannibal, both arguably better commanders than Alexander ( see reference to Plutarch above) would have defeated him too, no matter what. OK, those are very, very bold words... and to be frank, I think you're wrong. And many, many more would ...

Re: What if Alexander had lived?
But Alexander did plan to conquer the Mediterranean Basin? Anyway, his testament called for it. I don't think the romans would've stood a chance; all you need is take a look at Pyrrhus and his victories against them. Besides, Alexander was a better general, and his macedonian army was far better as ...

Re: Face of Alexander the Great
Hey Marcus! How are you? Yes, that pic blew my mind; I imagine that's how he looked, more or less... I can also imagine that he had very unique looks, very striking, very dashing... 1.What did you think of the Appelles painting? 2. The sources mention something about his eyes, no? That they were wat...

Face of Alexander the Great
Hi I want to share this pic with you - I think it's a copy of an original painting by Appelles. I should think that it's the closest we can get to producing a more than plausible likeness of they young macedonian conquerer's face. Added to which, I think it displays an uncanny, striking resemblance ...

Re: Olympias and Eurydice
- OK, agesilaos, so as far as you know no other source mentions the burning story except pausanias.
- and one of the earliest sources could be said to be Diodorus...?

Re: Olympias and Eurydice
OK, thanks Agesilaos... 1. But what other LATE sources wrote about the "burning/execution story"?(Another source-don't know which one-says that one of them, with regard to the execution-burning story, was pushed face down into a charcoal brazier, or something to that effect. Read it on the ...

1. But, all in all, is Pausanias a LATE source?
All the best

Re: Olympias and Eurydice
Hi Marcus I just wondered if you read what I'd written earlier... I'll repeat it to save you the trouble of scrolling : In my former question, I asked: "2. What does Fox mean when says, with regard to the burning story: "allegations only in the least reliable of late Alexander sources and ...

Re: Olympias and Eurydice
Thank you, Marcus In my former question, I asked: "2. What does Fox mean when says, with regard to the burning story: "allegations only in the least reliable of late Alexander sources and only concerns the baby..." Was this source Justin as well?" [/b] And you answered (without c...

Re: Olympias and Eurydice
OK, thanks Marcus Just one quickie... 1. Does Justin mention anything about them being burned? Btw, just read a passage from "Olympias:Mother of Alexander the Great", where it says that Pausanias claims that Olympias killed Cleopatra and her infant son by dragging them over a burning brazi...

Re: Olympias and Eurydice
Thanks Marcus Couple of more questions, if you don't mind... 1. what does Lane Fox mean, with regard to the Caranus torture story, when he says: "Justin ,epitome of Trogus may ultimately be using the gossiping and scandalous contemporary tHEOPOMPUS- we do not know this_ for the Caranus death st...

Thanks Marcus
Again, the words of Robin Lane Fox concerning the burning: "allegations only in the least reliable of late Alexander sources and only concerns the baby..."
But who was Pausanias from whom you referenced as a source?
