You misunderstood the quote. It was said in response to those who use modern standards of morality (warfare, human slaughter, rape) to judge Alexander and his campaign.

Re: Oh, I do like this!

The script does not look Greek to me, and if i am not mistaken other people than Macedonians have hands; in fact those two lines at the finger joints recall Hindu sculpture IMHO this graffito has nothing to do with AtG. :( the youtube video makes it obvious it's nonsense: nobody who really believes...

Re: Did Alexander dislike ugly people??!!

As for the rose-tinted lenses some wings of history's come to view him through... well, I guess, it's hard to judge someone who lived in a different time with different values and ideals... it's kinda unfair... I can't remember who said it, so I just quote it: "If anyone deserves to be judged ...

Re: Different colored eyes

1.Once and for all: did Alexander the Great have heterochromia - two different colored eyes? If you mean "was he born with two different coloured eyes", then once and for all: no :) (1) congenital heterochromia is rare - about 1 in 250,000 (2) The human brain is an incredibly powerful fac...

Re: Did Alexander dislike ugly people??!!

Read that author Green said: “It was well known that Alexander “actively disliked ugly people.”“ (Green, page 267) Is this true... where did he get that from? It does not add up with Alexanders chivalrous nature... all the best Robert I don't mean to disappoint you, but there really isn't any evide...

Route Ephesus - Miletus

Still plotting a trip through Turkey in Alexander's footsteps next year (assuming that the war isn't going to spread). For the section Sardis - Ephesus, I'm going with Engel's suggestion that Alexander went across Mr Tmolus, following a branch of the Royal Road. Personally, I think that's unlikely, ...

Re: Alexander's remains

Oh, hold a minute there, Andrew. Why you have brought Arrian into this argument is beyond me. Have I said anywhere in this debate, relevant to this discussion, that I believe in Arrian's infallibility? Have I actually said anywhere on Pothos that I believe Arrian is infallible? I think not. Perhaps...

Re: Alexander's remains

What actually happened according to the sources (admittedly the less frequently cited ones) is that Alexander asked Ptolemy to take his body to Egypt Alexander may or may not have asked Ptolemy to take his body to Egypt. It's irrelevant. What matters is that once in Egypt, Ptolemy didn't cremate hi...

Re: Alexander's remains

But where is this "silver crested helmet from tomb II" at Vergina, she-says-Borza-says-may-have- belonged-to-Alexander? Hi Chris, I assume it's this one: http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/Cities/VerginaB004.html . The only other picture I have is from an exhibition catalogue, and the picture'...

Re: Alexander's remains

Here's an article I saw over at History of the Ancient World . I haven't read it yet, but a quick glance at the incipit suggests it's about the relative claims of Siwa, Aegae and Alexandria to hold Alexander's remains. It a review article of everything we don't know for sure and not at all. But whe...

Re: THE APPEAL OF ALEXANDER IN THE CURRENT YEAR..?

I agree with Marcus, this thread should go into the off-topic forum. There are already several other threads on writing Alexander fiction which are well worth reading. Hello to everyone from me, a new member. Can I start by asking a question? That is: to whom, in your opinion, does Alexander appeal ...

Re: Alexander's Route from Granicus to Sardis

Despite Engels not having gone to Lydia, the Naval Intelligence Dept, whom he quotes for the barren nature of the central route, certainly did. I trust their findings rather than others unsubstantiated assertions; despite any supplies garnered from Zeleia the route would not be practicable for an a...

Re: Alexander the Great...Good or Bad King, or neither? An E

I hope that Pothosians will find the following Essay of interest and perhaps even thought provoking. Almost all of what follows is open to debate, and I hope that will occur, and that ‘spin-off’ threads will emerge about the various matters referred to. Good line of reasoning. And a lot of info in ...

Re: Alexander's Route from Granicus to Sardis

As this thread was to answer a question for a specific project, I'd like to summarize the consensus as I understand it: 1) Alexander crossed the Hellespont at Eleaus (ie, not with Parmenio & the army at Sestus) 2) it is very likely that Alexander went to Zeleia personally, and took his army with...
