Re: The skeleton...

There were also remains of horses, so this could account to the rest of the bones. But there are some issues here. The announcement is not very revealing, as per usual. Carbon dating must have been already made but the results are not announced. And all the remains were incomplete, and that's a myst...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Tovima.gr posted some news two days ago about the geo-survey showing further possible structures, and that the data are analyzed in order to construct a more clear picture. So, i guess they will officially announce the results when the data have been analyzed, but don't expect an image to be release...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

It appears that announcements about the tumulus soundings are coming in the next days - that's from a person who provided who provided rather specific info about the (very promising?) results and seems a rather reliable source. That was expected, Mrs. Peristeri said that the perivolos has still thi...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

The mound that covered the royal tombs at Vergina is a lot smaller than the mound Kasta, and there is no marble perivolos. As you said the perivolos is what costed the most. There is a natural hill in Kasta which covers about 2/3 of the overall mound, so they could have used this natural hill and bu...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Interesting yes, but i don't see Antigonos or Philip V spending money for a monument that big for themselves. It's the uniqueness of the size and design of the monument that poses the questions here. There were several temples, heroons and statues in honor of heroes and kings, like Resos, Brasidas, ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Yes the dating evidence are not firm, but then we have the monument being also a heroon. Now, i am assuming that they came to this conclusion cause of the marble doors that show marks that suggest they were opened more than once, the various pottery found inside, the lion on top, and other possible ...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Yes, the bull at least from what we can see follows a similar style to the mosaic, there is depth in the image.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

This is one of the seven parts of the entablature, and they haven't told us if it's the one in the center. The bull can be seen everywhere in ancient Greece and it isn't clear here if the figures are dancing around it or are ready to sacrifice it.

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Here is the 2 hours long audio with the questions from the reporters and answers from the team: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz4gJKNdyhw Of course it's all in Greek. As i have said before there are things that have not been mentioned in the news media, as each reporter or blogger creates a summar...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Andrew, how would you explain the coins from the 3rd century A.D. inside the tomb then? When the tomb was sealed no one could have gotten inside with all that sand and the coins were probably found on the floor level. As for the colors, they are faded, as are the epistyles or more accurately the par...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

There was a lot said in the presentation that have not been covered in the summaries of the news media that aim at the main points and headlines. Mr Lefantzis when he was showing slides of the mound against hill 133 (the big hill next to the mound) said that the mound should be viewed as a part of a...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Ok, time for a recap. The monument as seen from top down is a circle, it is eliptical in space in the vertical axis, it has an angle from North to South obviously for water drainage. The tomb was sealed at around the 3rd century A.D. The base of the lion monument has shields embossed. It further ind...

Re: The Sphinxes Guarding the Lion Tomb Entrance at Amphipolis

Mrs Peristeri showed a photo of a marble piece of the epistyle on the top of the Karyatids that fell and destroyed the karyatids face, so vandalism is excluded for this statue. We do not know whom the remains belong to (no mention on gender). Mrs Peristeris' presentation is finished. Mr Lefantzis st...
