Re: The male line of descension

...great, I'll forward this to the MIT biological survey immediately. Of course, I'll also have to take to the Illinois general assembly...since they seem to be the experts on the genealogical structure of ancient greece :)

The male line of descension

Hello All, I just heard a radio show featuring scientists talking about the venerable Y chromosone. The going theory states that all males have sprung from some prehistoric man some 150,000 years ago. The Y chromosone has been passed from grandfather to father to son and so on...almost unchanged sin...

Re: Darius's flight

Hello Nick, I would only take contention with your statement that the Persian empire was still intact after Guagamela. It was generally assumed to be Alexanders after this battle. Certainly, within a very short time it was. I would also say that it is not conclusive to me that it was smart for Dariu...

Re: ATG trip to Siwa

Hello,
I can't remember who was along, but I also assumed Hep was there because the priests seemed to know Hep when Alexander tried to have him declared a god after Hep's death...again, just a gut feeling here, nothing for sure.

Re: ATG trip to Siwa

Hello Marcus,
Wasn't it mentioned that Alexander when talking to Hep...had his answer, and when he returned to Pella, he would give it to his mother? At least, I assumed he was talking to Hep? Either way, it still doesn't confirm whether or not he came along.

Re: Sun Tzu vs Macedonian strategy

...hmmm, I really can't answer this one? Individual physical size may have mattered to a point, but a well trained smaller man will defeat an untrained larger man nearly every time. Also, consider that Alexander made excellent use of archers (one of his most relied upon and effective tactics) who ar...

Sun Tzu vs Macedonian strategy

Hello all,One of the most stiking differences between the Sun Tzu doctine and Macedonian (under Alexander) methodology was that Alexander preferred to attack his enemy at their stongest point. Sun Tzu teachings were designed to handle the opponent by attacking at the weakest place. Alexander seemed ...

"Whorehouse, Alexander's general? When, how, who? Never heard of this before and it sounds quite improbable. "Sorry, can't remember the details on any of this stuff, and don't have access to the book it was taken from. I read it right before my trip to Greece, and that was in 1998. If I recall corre...

Re: parthenon

Nice site! Before I went to Greece, I studied the history of Parthenon and all of its glory (before the Romans). The Parthenon has seen many battles and different rulers. One of the most notable was the Peloponesian war started right at the completion of the construction of the Parthenon (and beautif...

Re: The Divisions of the empire

I wasn't aware that there was a controversy? Ptolemy asserted himself as the authority in Egypt, and Nicator in Persia. The two kingdoms were almost from the outset at war with each other over border regions.

Re: Alexander's eyes

It appears likely that it was not a personal slam on Alexander, only an observation made by those witnesses during the skirmish that Alexander had to help put down. We don't hear of it after this incident either, so it seems likely to be just a temporary phenomenon. A good point made by Renault is t...

Re: New translation of the Iliad

...WOW!!!, that's awesome. I haven't heard of the Chapman translation, but that's not saying much. I had an english professor in college that introduced me to both Pope and Fitzgerald. He seemed to think Fitzgerald was the one to read, or at least one of the best translations...reading more like a n...
