Oration the tool to Fool

I thought I would bring the topic of oration to the Pothos as I do believe its rather a more potent weapon than most Swords.. I hear the Orations of Demosthenese and the speel that brought destruction to the Greek city states who were foolish enough to run with his words Thebes. I look at Alexander ...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

And history just keeps repeating itself...I.m aware we are off topic with Alexander,,,But realistically we are not...Alexander got out of there and blamed his troops mitiny...I have always credited Alexanders inteligence and history has shown ever since that no one gets out of Afghanistan as a victo...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

Spitamenes Your dead on the Money..Arrogant incompetent generals have plenty to answer. The Romans arrogance thought they could steam roll Hannibal at Canae where as the Useless Roman Nobles sat at the back pretending to be cavalry. The British were anhialated at Iskanwana because of an Idiotic Gene...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

I think it really silly to conclude Darius was behind the assasination. Darius really was not too bothered by the Greek invasion led by Alexanders so much so it was an ad hock the Persians made at the Granicus attempt...Totally wrong strategically stupid to the point Darius must have thought it was ...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander

Greater.. I thinks its relative..Maybe I do appreciate Alexanders greatness,,,But I would way had not Philip been killed I would say he would have got upto and beyond Issus...I think we could argue would Philip have taken Darius offer prior to Gaugamella,,,Maybe so I think Philip less brash and in a...

Re: Gold Sovereigns

Sorry for the thread Ive looked up St george Aparently not a lot of historical history...But theory he was a Roman of the 3rd Century AD living in Syria. The images throughout google indeed represent various stages of Costume throughout histories. If that makes sense. Some with Armour. the later eras...

Re: Gold Sovereigns

Thanks Marcus I've looked more closely at the Sovereign and Googled pictures of them....I know little about Saints and Shameful to say nothing a about Saint George It only became more apparent today As I noticed households displaying the Cross of Saint George. All I'm aware is that he was not even E...

Re: Gold Sovereigns

I do think its a depiction of Alexander adjusted. If Porthonians agree...Would it be ok to have the face grinded smooth and the Gragon Similaly removed and to have the manes of My Family Engraved on the smooth face....Could I say that my coin is Alexander The Great and have it mounted in a sovereign...

Now is it just me but im pretty sure the Depiction of St Geaorge Slaying the Dragon on the back is very much like the famouse frescos and pictures of the young Alexander with an advesary under the h...

Re: Tyre siege.

No I never believed he was punishing his troops for mutiny...Those troops helped him to turn back and save face in the process. Just like Bessus handily killing Darius...Sometimes I think alexander would put his hand in cow dung and it would still come out smelling of roses. Throughout his career......

Re: Tyre siege.

I think the idea was to forrage and look for locals with bits and bobs..I recall they came to no end of trouble. Camp washed away with rain floods. I think they got lost and wandered away from the coast...I thnk probably they did take it for granted and were ill prepared..The Makran hugging the coas...

Re: Tyre siege.

Spitamenese I cant really say what the knowledge of Makran was..But I assume he would have some local knowledge the same as afhganistan. All im saying from what I read of his troubles there and trouble even today. Looking at the map the precarious trip across Makrak is strategically swifter. Yes im ...

Re: Tyre siege.

Absolutely Marcus. Of coarse he needed to care for the Navy traveling along the coast..It was also a strategic expedition. As far as if the makran can be resoursed and supplied in a Logistics was its a much quicker way to get back up there If after getting back to basics,Sorting out his trusted band...
