Paul Cartledge's Take on the Diverse Views of Alexander
I am in the process of reading up on two Alexander books at the moment: one is called ‘Alexander – Destiny and Myth’ by French historian Claude Mosse (Emeritus Professor at the University of Paris VIII) that was written in 2001 and translated into English in 2004 and the pricey and scholarly ‘Brill’...

Yes, and there are many Christians in Korea and China as well - tens of millions. But the official orthodox Christian religion as we now know it originated in Rome under Constantine. Until Constantine made it Rome's official religion in 313AD or so, there were dozens of different versions of Christ...

Just on which alexkhan2000 , on this (or another thread) you mentioned you'd not read the ancient Alexander historians. Perhaps you might? It would help when reading such articles as the Maihafer one. Arrian is no turgid read. He is no prize winning author to be sure but still quite readable. Ditto...

Well, I don't want to get into the subject of religion too much but Christianity is a Western religion. I'm not a religious person at all, but I've studied various religions of the world from a historical and cultural perspective. Whether Jesus was a Easterner or whether he even existed is an entir...

I'm not sure if these have been posted here already, but here are some interesting and detailed articles about three of the four Alexander's set piece battle victories on historynet.com: The Battle of Granicus http://www.historynet.com/historical_figures/3036426.html The Battle of Issus http://www.h...

I agree the Khan was great and deserves reckognition. However most of GKs enemies were beaten befor a battle through Shear terror. Massed Monghul Cavalry against Disciplined formeative Infantry. Debatable. And measure for Measure Alexanders Cavalry were equal if not better than any cavalry in histo...

There are so many fascinating aspects about Alexander, but the things that interest me the most are: 1. Alexander's ultimate goals - what were they and how far did he really intend to go? 2. Alexander's views of the East - did he really admire Persian and Asian culture or were his orientalizing poli...

What a peculiar thing to say. Of course the world would be different - and their would be nothing weird to imagine: that would simply be life! I'm not sure what you are trying to say in reference to religion? But I think you need to recognise that Jesus was an Easterner- his religious teachings ori...

Hello Ed, I’m sure the Persian soldiers would’ve found a way to execute anyone who was challenging the status quo too much, just the way the Romans did. Empires - whether we now classify them as ‘eastern’ or ‘western’ - always have a few things in common. ;) Christianity has spread so far and wide ...

I wish I had known about this and I could have saved around $50! It's a lot for a book but I couldn't resist. It's a serious book but still quite readable with interesting insights from various scholars. I've only read several articles so far but I like what I've been reading and I look forward to r...

Re: Alexander vs. Other Great Conquerors & Military Lead
I thought the list of 100 most influential military leaders was very interesting. Alexander only third - how can this be? :) I liked the way the compiler of the list had tried to cover all ages and places - even both genders, glad to see Joan of Arc in there! But I thought it was a bit biased towar...
