Re: Alexander's plans for Arabia

As an aside, Patala is a much more ancient city than Hephaestion. He may have created an alliance or developed a port at most.

Re: Alexander's plans for Arabia

Thank you so much Alexias. That gives me the strategic background. The Coastal inhabitants (Modern Yemen etc.) were famous for trade with India, Africa and South East Asia among other lands. I think in-land Bedouins would've been difficult to conquer. Similar to the the northern Caucasus semi-nomadi...

Alexander's plans for Arabia

Hey guys, Please can you tell me about Alexander's plans to conquer Arabia before the beautiful Hephaestion broke his heart? The building of ships? Frankincense? Myrrh? Is this only in Arrian or other sources also? What was the exact term used to describe the area or its inhabitants? Thanks heaps in...

The glory days of the Oracle of Amun is back. Are you off to Siwa next month?

Am I the last to know? "Confirmed: New discovery at the Amun Oracle Temple in Siwa Oasis, Egypt! The Source In The Sahara's Dustin T. Donaldson and Robynn Iwata spent a full year watching the slow-moving behaviour of the sun's rays across an inner sanctum wall deep in the Amun Oracle at Siwa Oa...

Re: Statues of Alexander and Hephaestion, National Museum of Athens

Hi All, I thought when Alexander took up mixed Persian and Macedonian clothes, Hephaestion was the only one to emulate him in this? So, they were both similarly dressed in a unique niche of two. How many "fusion Macedonian/Persian male warrior Achaemenid court" fashion trends could have sp...

You could watch the Oliver Stone Alexander movie if you're tired of reading. ;) I still love it.

Re: Babylonian cuneiform tablets from 350 to 50 BCE translated

Ach darn, I was hoping they would contain at least the price of grain or astronomical 'omens' regarding the rise and fall of rulers. They've had this tablet sitting in the British Museum since 1881! So about Marduk being Jupiter - was the Roman Jupiter an amalgamation of Zeus and Marduk? As an aside...

Re: alex in afghanistan

Hi all, Genetic studies indicate the Kalash are not descendants of Alexander the Great (2007). They are likely descendants of hunter-gatherers from Serbia who moved to the region during the Paleolithic times, way before Alexander. Which is going back even further and very interesting. http://www.ncb...

Re: Sogdian Rock

Hi Sogdian enthusiasts, There's some interesting new genetic information out that may add to the source information or verify it. The paper is linked below. I'll write a decent summary in relation to Alexander if I find something relevant. Let me know what you guys think. :) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih....

Babylonian cuneiform tablets from 350 to 50 BCE translated

Hey all, Long time no see. The Babylonian tablets served as a source of information for the Achamenids and Xerxes. Some more tablets have been translated and I couldn't help but notice the dates. Do you think it's possible that these (translated or not) might contain information about Darius, Alexan...

Re: Tyre siege.

Does anyone know where to find some good images of what Tyre looks like in modern day? And if there are any ruins from Alexanders day still standing? I do know of Roman ruins but cannot find anything that is said to be older than that. Even ancient ruins in old Tyre on the mainland would be great i...

Re: alexander map, suggestions and help.

Greetings all, So I've had this idea floating around the comments forum for about a week now and I was given the suggestion to put it here in the main forum, the gist of the story is I'm wanting to put together an interactive Alexander map for Pothos. What separates this from all the other Alexande...

Re: Regime Change

The foundation myth of the Achaemenid empire states that Cyrus, when he defeated Astyages, despite their history of animosity, he allowed Astyages to "retire" in a manner befitting his station and married his daughter. This is a nice story reconciling the Medians and Persians. However, the...

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

Asking whether Alexander was a racist is an extremely difficult question to answer. I should add that any answer given would have no relation to that speech, either. Technically speaking, according to our modern world view, I suppose he was - the Greek view, which he appears to have held, at least ...
