I wonder why Fidel has such an interest in him...not that i don't he should. He's also a big fan of Owen Glendower, but that makes sense because he was a Guerilla fighter like Castro.

It is a shame that the link has changed, I would have liked to have seen the interview. Tom Holland is a good writer, he should do a book about Alexander- although I have heard that he is moving away from the Classical world in his next book and writing up on the Middle Ages.

Hello... I've always wondered if the Greek city states would have joined with Memnon if his forces would have landed in Greece. After all, the defeat at Chaeronea would have being fresh in many peoples minds. Perhaps they would have remained loyal to Alexander and Antipater, seeing as many others wo...

Hi Everyone.

I'm not sure what option I would choose, but I definately don't think that Alexander had planned Darius' murder. I agree with Dean that he wanted to slip into the role to save himself trouble in the future.

Hi ! I don't have much books about this era, but maybe you could go check out 'The Hellenistic World' by F.W Walbank, published by Fontana Press. Although this book is not specifically about the wars of the successors, it does have a few chapters about the warfare of the period, including the wars b...

Hello! Perhaps Empires can never last because they only deal with the short term. I have often wondered what would have happened if Alexander would have lived to an old age. Would he have carried on his wars of conquest? If he would have done it, there is probably no chance that the territories he h...

Alexander was definately a military genius who managed to turn a few bad situations to his advantage, but i would also say it was pure luck that he managed to survive many situations such as being attacked by several Persians at Granicus or the arrow through the lung at the siege of Multan.

One thing is certain is that you have to respect the guys who managed to do all this and to do it while fighting on some occasions. I am reminded of Alexander's assault on the Sogdian Rock and how he managed to get some of his men to climb up the steep cliff edge in almost complete darkness. Even th...

Oddly enough I read about the same threat being used by parents on Sicily, but this time they threatened their children with the Greek inventor and mathematician, Archimedes rather than Alexander. I think the reason behind this is that he was seen as a sorceror or a magician within his lifetime, due...

Hi everyone! It is a very stirring speech. I was just reading it now ( The Penguin Classics, Aubrey De Selincourt version) and I thought that many of Alexander's claims were rather dubious, such as his claim that he had given each of the dead soldiers a fitting burial, although I thought that he had...

It's definately strange imagining Alexander's army and the enemy yawning at each other, though I always thought that the Macedonian army made little use of archers on the battlefield.

Still a cool anecdote though. :D

Imagine if Darius and Alexander had decided to settle their buisness in single combat at Gaugamela instead of letting their armies engage. Would Alexander have allowed it? I think he would probably would have liked to duel with Darius, seeing as he was a big fan of the Illiad and that he emulated Ac...
