Re: Just Back From Greece!!!

I don't disagree Efstathie, but the reality is that there're just too many antiquities, more that those that the Archaeological service can attend to! A friend of mine is an archaeologist and she was telling me that they're totally overextended. They have to focus only on the major finds (and there'...

Re: What games did Alexander play as a child?

It seems that many of these game are still being played, or at lease used to, until fairly recently. At least I (and I'm sure many more) recognize games I played as a kid (including Knucklebones!).Plato (in his "Laws") also mentions that children should play with fake-arms (arches, swords ...

Re: About Greek Ancestry

Hi, I'm aware that genetically, the closest people to Greeks are Armenians and after them, it's the Persians. (cannot find my sources at the moment). Plus I lived for 6 months in Tehran and can confirm that from experience :-)Hi all, good to be back, after a lot of hard work and a long, well-deserve...

Re: non-combat life

I can see some parallelism with the way US troops are treating Iraqis.
These soldiers are not having a good time there either:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4474715.stm

Plus, when we speak of future historians we must remember that history is being written by the winners. If Hitler had won the war, we'd be reading a much different "history" today...

Re: where can one hear Macedonian spoken?

Let me insult you for a change:"Pella (or Parisi) you're an idiot and an insult to this forum". How's that? You have been told so many times that this is not the place for political propaganda, yet you choose to continue. Well, at least you show us how *not* serious you're. Also it shows h...

Re: Nikos Kazantzakis' book

Kazantzakis has a very discinct style and I consider him a marvellous writter. Sometimes he becomes very "esoteric" and can become even "difficult" to read, but this book is -as already mentioned- intended for younger readers and therefore "easier".It's definatelly a bo...

What about Philip's ceremonial shield? The one made of ivory, gold and glass. Is it also in the Onassis museum?

Re: Veering a little OT

Marcus, of course I'm not saying (or even implying) that the Christians were imitating the Greek religion, there're foundamental differences between the two (although some celebrations derive from ancient Greek/Roman ones).I was simply noting some similarities that are obvious to the common eye.On a...

Re: Veering a little OT

If I recall Ptolemy was "awarded" the epithet "Soter" because he "saved" some city (Athens?) and was named as such by its citizens.Jesus was called "Soter" because he would save our souls.Anyway, my intention was to show that by reducing lesser deities importa...

Re: sacrifices

Hi Ruth, it was definatelly Zeus Soter. I remember it very clearly and it's a recent find. There were pictures, in the article, of the foundations of a temple with engraved eagles etc... Perhaps it was joined Zeus-Ammon/Soter?

Re: Did Alexander improve the status of women? (cont'd)

You have left out a significant contribution. The financial part. By throwing into the global market the vast Persian gold reserves that were kept dormant for centuries, he had created an unprecedented economic boom. Trade multiplied immensely and so did the spread of ideas (as a consequence). Soon,...

Re: sacrifices

Alas Smitty! I cannot find any pictures of it. I have seen the excavations in some Greek newspaper, as well as pictures of engraved eagles at the corners of the temple. Who knows when the findings will be officially presented. The cult of Zeus Soter was quite popular at the time, also in Athens and i...

Re: sacrifices

Hi Ruth,My guess is that they would make the sacrifice, to the God that corresponded to the occasion. So it would be e.g. Demeter for harvesting or an agricultural event in general etc. When it comes to an assembly, I would say that they would have sacrificed to Zeus, especially to Zeus Soter. The m...
