Re: Ptolemy's army at Gaza

There's an extract from 'Lost Battles' on Prof Sabin's homepage, with downloads including a chapter about Hydaspes & the cyberboard (incompatible with Macs) for those of you who are interested - Philip encourages links to his web pages, not the separate files.

Re: Alcibiades. Need info.

And of course there is also Paul Levinson's The Plot to save Socrates (where Socrates isn't saved, but the consolation is an affair with Alkibaides)... Given a choice between this & the Pressfield, I'd pick this, mainly because it is meant to be amusing. Phaedo, best of luck with the Alkibiades ...

Re: Alcibiades. Need info.

If you can bear to read more fictional Alkibiades try the following:

The Eye of Cybele by Daniel Chavarriá
Achilles his Armour by Peter Green

and the two "young adult" novels:

The Road to Sardis by Stephanie Plowman
The Flowers of Adonis by Rosemary Sutcliffe.

*enjoy*

I tried to post yesterday, but our server died (revenge for me snarling at ISS earlier in the day, no doubt)... Driving times - you'll find it's quicker than you think... The toll roads are fine (although some could do with a bit of repair now) & traffic out side towns is pretty light (mind you,...

Karen - I'm actually leaving Greece on the 16th (a public holiday, so driving back to the airport will be fun) - think I might be battling through departures as you come through arrivals - oh, what a shame... Paralus - isn't Sparta Museum closed for renovation? One of our postgrads. was due to go th...

I'm off to Greece on 1 June for my annual wander on the mainland, and can recommend the following, some from personal experience: Nafplio - I've stayed for some year at Pension Helen - parking is very close by, which is a bonus in the Old Town. Her son runs Hotel Byron, one of the beautiful boutique...

If we're collecting Alexanders in Henry V, I think there's also a reference to him in the speech before Harfleur (fathers who are "like so many Alexanders", I think) - the "Once more unto the breach, dear friends" one... Slighly off topic - I have a fondness for Terence Rattigan'...

Oscar frocks - & Alexander

I fear this will be regarded as a frivolous post - & I have no excuse, other than it is Friday... I noticed a line in a Telegraph on-line article - "Kate Winslet, nominated for best actress, chose an elegant, pale green chiffon gown by Valentino, which featured a trailing scarf panel traili...

Many years ago I went to a tent exhibition in the Topkapi - the tents displayed (or rather a selection of panels, as they were all far too large to get a whole tent in the exhibition space - the old stable block) were pretty close to this - including the bullion, the furs & fine materials - alth...

Off the top of my head I can only think of a couple - there's so much modern battlefield stuff, that it swamps the ancient stuff -but I'm sure there's more! There's Fields of Conflict: Battlefied Archaeology from the Roman Empire to the Korean War , ed. Douglas Scott - but that doesn't help us! Anci...

Ah, yes - there are even 2 sequels to the Judith French book... The Barbarian & The Warrior... In The Barbarian Roxanne doesn't die, but is smuggled away to be with Ptolemy (who is afflicted with visions of Alexander at inconvenient moments). The Warrior concentrates on Alexander & Roxanne's...
