Re: They can now identify ancient diseases
I read about this new discovery in the "Times" last week and immediately thought wow! It just seems incredible that we can gain such detailed knowledge about events so long past. By chance on the same evening after reading the article there was a TV programme on about two bodies found in p...

Re: Troy by David Gemmell
I haven't read any of David Gemmel's books, but the reviews for "Lord of the Silver Bow" are good. I was thinking of trying it so I'd be interested to hear the opinion of anyone here who has read it. Incidentally, is it just my imagination or has Troy become a "hot" subject for f...

Re: Logic Or Denial?
Hi Marcus,Maybe Jan thinks that Olympias wouldn't have made such a fuss if she had been guilty? A sort of she felt able to honour Pausanias because she had nothing to hide and could give vent to her feelings without needing to dissemble? I can see the logic in that, someone had done what she would h...

Re: Logic Or Denial?
I think Alexander's involvement is one of those questions which can be argued either way. Yes, he could be ruthless and capable of removing anyone standing in his way, but what about his genuine religious beliefs? Parricide (sp?) was a really serious crime and maybe a step too far for him to contemp...

Re: Book on AGT
Thanks Jan and Rex. Since it doesn't sound as if this book adds anything new I won't buy it, but I might get it out of my local library if they can get hold of a copy for me.Cheers,
Kate

Book on AGT
Hi Everyone,I've just read a review of a book on Alexander - "Alexander the Great, Journey to the End of the Earth" by Norman Cantor, an American historian. Has anyone on the forum read this one? The review was favourable.Best wishes and a Happy New Year to all,Kate

Everyday stuff in Alexander's world
Hi everyone,I'm trying to find out information on things like weights and measures and how time was actually measured during Alexander's lifetime. Some of it I've discovered already, but can anyone recommend a good source for the smaller details? I know, for example, that the Greeks had water clocks...

Hi,I'm just back home from holiday and catching up with my post, which is why I didn't reply earlier, but I just wanted to say thanks for this article, Ruthaki. I thought it was very interesting and it's a place I will try to visit next time I'm in that part of Greece.Cheers,Kate

Re: Titles for Philip and Alexander
Hi again,Thanks to all for the info posted.Marcus, I did know that "Your Majesty" was a Tudor invention. In fact, I seem to remember reading somewhere that Henry VII invented it 'cos he was keen on demanding respect due to his rather shaky claim to the throne!Alexander, thanks for the refs...

Titles for Philip and Alexander
Hi everyone,I was wondering if anyone knew if the Macedonians used any special titles to adress Philip and Alexander. Addressing an English King you might have finished your sentence with "Sire" or "your Majesty". Do you think there was a Macedonian equivalent or would someone ha...
