Re: Researching Seleucus's rise to power

Wow, you are a pretty rude person, no wonder the forum is dead with people like you lurking here. A lot of this history is very ancient and open to interpretation anyway. To discuss and politely offer opinions is not nonsense.

Re: Researching Seleucus's rise to power

Apparently, white hellebore does cause fever. Fever is body's immune response to a perceived invader and so some types of poisons do induce fever. Yes, the poisoner would have to know how much to give and how often, but when planning to kill a king, they would probably have done their research and t...

Re: Researching Seleucus's rise to power

But Alexander's murderers might have thought of that themselves. If he were to die suddenly at a banquet, people will immediately think he was poisoned. However, if it is a poison that is administered slowly, perhaps even in the guise of water or a medicine, and if the king deteriorates slowly, Alex...

Re: Researching Seleucus's rise to power

Not at all an expert here, but the more I read of Alexander's life, especially towards the end of his life, the more I am convinced that he was done away with some how. He was wasting a lot of money on grand schemes of no practical value. His aspirations towards Arabia were also unappealing. Also, h...

Re: Was Philip II Even Greater than Alexander the Great?

I will be brief. I am no expert, just a student of history. So whatever I wrote was what I have gathered from readings. Alexander inherited a lot of the experienced advisors and military generals, tactics and military formations, from his father. Philip actually bothered to rule and administer whate...

Researching Seleucus's rise to power

From a smaller player to a larger player, Seleucus's rise was quite extraordinary but also very well deserved for he proved himself to be not just a brave soldiers but a capable administrator and ruler. Hello, I am researching Seleucus and in the course of my studies I came across a comment by a his...

Re: Was Philip II Even Greater than Alexander the Great?

Well, Philip was a better military brain, better at administration and overall a better ruler. He had plans to go into Persia but he died before he could actually invade. So, history gave Alexander the sort of more starry role of the conqueror. But, I feel that if Philip had been alive he would have...

Re: Forum seems dead, but what the heck...

Thank you for the book suggestion
I like Seleucus as he seems to me to have been the kind of person, ruler and administrator I wish Alexander was.

Re: If music be the food of love...

I think that even his persiophilia had an element of attraction to the arts and the music and beautiful clothes and the whole regalia in Persian culture. Persians were said to have learnt dance as they learn to walk.

Re: Forum seems dead, but what the heck...

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Um, another little query...
On the flip side, did some Persians know Greek? Any exples? Would there be Greek tutors or something like that in Darius's courts?

Re: Forum seems dead, but what the heck...

But it seems impractical for Seleucus to have ruled Persia without knowing the language at some point? Also, what was his relationship like with the king like? It surprises me that he isn't mentioned as a close companion even though he was a fabulous general and also conformed to Alexander's Persian...

Forum seems dead, but what the heck...

Who were the generals who were okay with Alexander's persianization. I mean, I know Hephaistion was. But who else? For example, since Seleucus seems to have had a happy marriage, did he communicate in Persian with his Persian wife!?

If music be the food of love...

Hi, This is my first post in this forum. I have an enquiry. How important was dance, music and theatre to Alexander given that his own proficiency in playing the lyre was mocked ans discouraged by his father? Two important people in his life seem to have been great singers and dancers, namely, Bagoa...
