Alexander's Feast isn't an opera, it's an oratorio!
Other than that, sounds like great fun!

Alexander's literate grandmother
I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is an inscription on a statue dedicated by Alexander's grandmother, something written by her in celebration of her achievement of learning to write. Can't find it again or recall the details-- does this ring any bells for anyone? (I think it was in or ne...

Re: Hephaiston's death
So sorry about your friend, that's terrible.
An interesting comment on Hephaestion's death that was in a footnote of the Landmark edition of Arrian— iirc, it pointed out that malaria is often characterized by extreme thirst in the final stages, which would explain him supposedly guzzling wine.

Hehe. So, I actually ended up having my flight changed, and now I have a whole day. So, I will definitely look out for these! Thank you!

An hour at the Met
I'm going to be flying into New York later this month, then pretty much immediately leaving the city. However, I am hoping to be able to eke out a single hour at the Met museum. I've never been before, and the 1-hour time limit is strict. So... I need some help  The website says they have 30,...

Re: Alexander's appearance
Well, I suppose it's all a matter of taste :P Interesting about the twisted neck theory. I remember something about him supposedly holding his head habitually to one side but don't remember where it was from-- however, given that he was seriously wounded in one shoulder at Gaza, it doesn't seem unbe...

Re: The story of Drypetis
Ooh, thank you! I had actually been looking for something to read in French, which I read only OK. It looks like this is this author's second book on Alexander, and there's also Le Tigre bleu de l’Euphrate— have you read that one?

Maps
Does anyone have recommendations for good maps showing Alexander's route (or hypotheses thereof, in sections where the geography is unclear) in relative detail? The Landmark edition of Arrian had a good one, but I had to give it back to the library Is there anything online?

Re: Alexander in the "Porus" series
Okay, I'm convinced... but I don't watch that much TV and am unlikely to make it through 250 episodes. Anyone have a "top 10 Porus episodes for the discerning Alexander nerd" rec list?

Re: New members: Ask a question
I don't know if "manipulation" would really be the right word, because it implies a modern understanding of what being a "historian" is. We assume historians today to be actively engaged in trying to counteract, or at least acknowledge, their own biases, and present a picture of ...

Re: Did Alexander carry out a Massacre in Asia Minor
IIRC, the armies of most of the Greek city-states, and in general most armies before Philip's professionalization of the Macedonian army, were wither not paid at all or paid very little-- the promise of plunder was, essentially, salary. So even though Alexander's men were being paid (for the most pa...
