Re: Excavations in Alexandria
Some new findings of the Limneos-Papakosta excavations are shown on the Netflix docuseries about Alexander (maybe one of the few interesting points of these series). The boundaries of the ptolemaic building, which is at the corner of the R1 & L2 road intersections of Alexandria, is around 30-40 ...

Publication: The identification of the Royal Tombs in the Great Tumulus at Vergina: A comprehensive review
This paper just came out: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jasrep.2023.104279 by Bartsiokas et al., where they attempt to further clarify their position on the identification of the remains (e.g. Philip in Tomb A, etc.), while also offering responses to various points raised by those dismissing their inter...

New views of the Amphipolis tomb
Recently, the known Amphipolis monument was opened up to restricted groups, including journalists. As a result, there are numerous photos and videos of high quality from the interior of the monument, floating around the web. The interior is still subject to technical works and restoration, so not ev...

Re: Excavations in Alexandria
I am also not convinced the statue shows Alexander. Another deviation is the nose shape - in most depictions I am aware of Alexander's nose is more "straight". In any case: the publication of the statue (before the part of the hand was found) is here: https://www.academia.edu/44991229/LIMN...

Excavations in Alexandria
Excavations in Alexandria by Limneos-Papakosta have been mentioned here before, but its now interesting that these continue to go on for over a decade since they started in the location of the Shallalat gardens. This is at the location slightly north of the central Canopic street (R1 street) and ins...

Re: Papyri in Alexander IV's tomb
Back to this old topic: analysis of papyri was published in 2018! Didnt get the attention it deserved. Papyri were also in Tomb B. https://www.jstor.org/stable/26603985 Some nice photos of them are available there, article is on copyright so cant add them here, but hopefully you can have access to it.

Re: National Geographic special on the tomb of Alexander
Her project webpages are here: http://www.hriac.com/ The story of discovering the statue is several years old now, her 2017/2018 excavation reports dont reveal anything eye-catching, Amphipolis-type find, but maybe any of these are kept for display in the documentary. Alexander's tomb or not, I am l...

Re: Amphipolis article
If the monogram is read correctly as "ΗΦΑΣΤΙΩΝΟΣ", then it is translated "of Hephaestion" not "for Hephaestion", so it would not be appropriate for the contractor or a worker at the site. But it remains to be seen how the monogram is read, whether there are alternatives...

Re: The tomb of Kratesipolis
I think this review (https://www.esag.swiss/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/review_Eretria19_Gnomon2011.pdf) of Huguenot's thesis is very insightful about Macedonians in Eretria and many other aspects of her research. I have her full publication, but its in French, so reading is selective and slow :-) (....

The tomb of Kratesipolis
Hi all, on reading various sources about Amphipolis, I became interested into the Tomb of Erotes, located in Eretria, in Greece. The more I read, the more interesting it became so I thought its worth sharing. The tomb was discovered accidentally at the end of the 19th century. Workers digging in ord...

Re: The excavation of Amphipolis continues
day.jpg That is the same location in daylight. For me, the night photo shows nothing more than just different reflection from exposed soil and soil with vegetation. It is just a false perception of a flat surface with an "arc"-like feature. Perception of flatness comes from the high-contr...

Re: Alexandria
Thanks a lot for the screenshots Alexias. The sideburns and the spear handle on the left hand are good arguments to tie this statue with Alexander & the work Alexander with the Spear by Lysipus. But I am still curious about few things: a) The statue looks way too polished for its hellenistic age...

Alexandria
There was a documentary about the history, culture, greek community and archaeology of Alexandria in a Greek national TV channel this summer, which you can now find online here: http://webtv.ert.gr/ert3/27ion2017-beyond-borders-alexandria-tis-egyptou-ke-tis-mesogiou/ The documentary is in Greek, but...
