There was several empires larger than the empire of Alexander, not only the mongol empire.

Re: alexander and ghengis.

Once, a friend who wanted to make fun of me, told me that he saw at TV a simulated show where Attila the Hun fought sine missione with Alexander. Of course I've asked him what was the result of the battle, and he told me that Attila jumped upon Alexander's spear and broked her; then, the hun raised ...

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

marcus, I'm sorry for what I will say next, but you (not only you, actually) describe Alexander like a body without soul or any feelings at all. I remembered now a definition from Iorga, a highly apreciated romanian historian, who was saying that, I quote, "when you write history, you must know...

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

it was a bold move, political or not. And one that very well could have been done out of love. I wonder if this move was really necesary. An historian from my country wrote in his book about Alexander that he fell in love with Roxanne in the first moment he saw her. I quoted him in my essay. I woul...

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

What is the exact word that Arrianus used to define the relation between Alexander and Roxanne?
Attraction? Love?

I have wrote in my essay that Alexander truly loved Roxannes, a barbarian woman, as Arrianus says.

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

Hi dean, Thank's for your opinion. I confess that I have gone too far saying 'equality for all', but regarding the Greek and persian aristocracies I want to say that Alexander treated them on the same level, in his goal to make a solide base for future conquests. What do you think? I would like to r...

marcus, In a documentary directed by Jim Lindsay named The True Story of Alexander the Great , made with the participation of Bosworth and Green, it’s says that Alexander, at Siwa, received the confirmation that he was destinated to rule the ‘empire of the world’. What is the meaning of this sentenc...

Alexander must have done it in order to help the Persians accept him as their new Great King (...) and he knew that he would need the Persians to be pliable if the empire wasn't to collapse (...) Tarn based his theory only on this 2 facts above?
Oh boy, what would I give to read his work about Alexander before reading Badian's article.

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

marcus,

No one asked you to type phrases from the book. Only to reveal some ideas that helped Tarn to construct his theory.

Thank you for Badian's article!

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

I've already removed the Opis speech from my front page of the essay and yes, it's a irony to say that Alexander wanted equality while he had a big number of slaves.

Perhaps I should only say that Alexander treated equal both Greek and persian (barbarian) aristocracies?

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

My belief is based on the fusion that happened between Greeks and barbarians under Alexander’s rule. If he wanted, as marcus says, to create a solide base for his future campaings, he did create simultaneously a temporary unity between Greeks and nations that he conquered. Starting from this, if he ...

Re: Alexander the Great and his 'equality'

Wow, that's quite a big task, as there are literally hundreds of authors that wrote about Alexander. You need to read a few of them, though. Yes. A teacher promised me hundreds of titles about Alexander, but he didn't kept his word. I've founded, on my own, just a few authors at the public library....
