Re: Would Alexander Empire be as Unjustr as Today

Hey,Was there social welfare then? I imagine that it was survival of the fittest. I doubt that there were first world and third world countries in the same sense that we have today, but there is always a gap between rich and poor, and I believe it would have been greater in Alexander's lifetime rath...

Re: alexander/maps

Hey,I've always liked the one in the back of J.R. Hamilton's ATG. It's not the most detailed, or the most attractive, or even the most useful, but it's a nice mix of all 3.Elpinice

Re: The Word Coward

I don't think you can just say that Alexander was or wasn't a coward. When it comes down to it, I have no doubt that on some days he was cowardly, and on some days he was brave.I guess the only thing that you could do to find an overall 'label' for Alexander's bravery would be to count up the incide...

Re: Can we call Alexander a hero?

Except that bombing civilians didn't always have that effect. Hiroshima, for example. It would have also made supporting the army more difficult. True, revenge would probably have been on their minds, but that doesn't mean that the tactic doesn't have other advantages (sickly brutal though it may se...

Re: A trilogy Of Movies?

Hey,I agree totally. The biggest problem for a director trying to make a trilogy would be funding. Peter Jackson originally planned to make one movie, but changed his mind early on, because he decided there was too much material. He then shopped around for funding with his plans to make three films....

Re: Can we call Alexander a hero?

I believe Alexander is a hero, although I disagree with a lot of the things that he does. I agree that you should not judge someone like Alexander by our standards. Few people would live up to it. The ancient Greeks would probably look at a 'hero' like Nelson Mandela, and wonder what was so good abo...

Re: Rebutting Myself

Hey,Thanks for the advice, Karen. I've seen the theatrical version, and enjoyed it, but found it annoying at the same time. There was so much that they missed out! I've always thought that anybody wanting to make a movie about Alexander should take a leaf out of Peter Jackson's book, and make two mo...

Re: Influence of Aristotle on Alexander

I find it difficult to wholeheartedly accept the idea that Aristotle promoted "high greek culture" with Alexander. Certainly Alexander spread many Aristotelian ideas around his empire, but he also disagreed with many "high greek" values, such as the belief that Greeks were superi...

Re: I dont understand why Alexander is so famous

Your points are well-made. I haven't read much into the area of whether the Persian Empire was weak, and thus presumed that Kohyar was correct when he said that it was. My point in doing so was merely to show that it wasn't necessary to discard his ideas to give good reasons why Alexander is famous....

Re: I dont understand why Alexander is so famous

Well, obvoiusly Alexander is famous for a variety of reasons. One of these is that he conquered a huge area of land. Another of these is that he was European. In the same way that Eastern conquerors are more famous in the East, Western conquerors are more famous in the West, and the West is the domi...

Re: Alexandrias so Called Drinking.Cassander Propoganda

Just thinking... Would Alexander have had to have been very drunk to kill Cleitus? Cleitus was anti-fusion, and it's possible that he and Alexander had other disagreements that caused Alexander to be frustrated with him, like Philotas. He doesn't seem to have coped with being insulted or diminished ...

Re: 5 Most Defining Moments of Alexander's Military Genius

Thank you. I do wonder, however, how much of that was genius, and how much was just plain courage, charisma, and leadership ability. I haven't been able to find much information about Alexander that suggests he was original, or strategically brilliant. Instead, he is just portrayed as an excellent a...
