Re: Hephaestion's worship - translation #3

There is, however, a reason that seems to me compelling enough to justify Arrian's citation of the oracle's refusal to recognize the deification of Hephaestion . Lucian, more or less at the same time as Arrian, in De calumnia gives ample space to an excursus on the deification of Hephaestion , a sub...

Re: Hephaestion's worship - translation #2

Four authors report the funeral of Hephaestion ; of these only one, Justin, does not mention Alexander consulting the oracle to know what kind of honors were appropriate for the deceased: [11] “Dum haec aguntur , unus ex amicis eius Hephaestion decedit , dotibus primo formae childish , mox obsequiis...

Re: Hephaestion's worship - translation #1

THE CULT OF HEPHESION: A NEW PERSPECTIVE by ALINA VENERI The essay by J. Reames -Zimmerman, 'The Mourning of Alexander', Syllecta Classica 2001, pp.98-145, opening up the hitherto more limited field of alexandrography to the area of socio-anthropological studies , is very stimulating and invites fur...

Thank you for this. The link is here https://www.academia.edu/125404971/IL_C ... _EFESTIONE.

As I do not know Italian unfortunately, I have had to run this through Google translate. It may not be terribly accurate, but would you like me to post it here?

Alexander (2004) Scripts #1

This month is the 20th anniversary of Oliver Stone's movie. Below are some photos of original script pages. Not all of these ended up in the film exactly as written and it is interesting to see the changes - like Alexander and Hephaestion being in bed instead of on the balcony, and Hephaestion being...

Re: “Beloved Hephaestion - detested Hephaestion”

even the famous pulling of swords with Krateros in India was, I think, invented by Plutarch as a literary trope (and I will argue as much in that paper). Very interesting idea! I can see that the pulling of swords might well have been embroidery, but presumably there was a serious row of some sort....

Alexander's Tunic

Apparently, the fabric in which the bones found inside the gold box from Tomb II were wrapped has been analysed. It has long been known that it was purple, but it appears it was cotton (unusual) and contained a brilliant white substance normally only found in Persian garments. This has reinforced th...

Re: “Beloved Hephaestion - detested Hephaestion”

I've come to have more questions about the supposed quarrel between Hephaistion and Krateros, and just presented a paper on it, which (I think) will appear in Karanos in a little while. And in the book I'm working on about the two of them. Look forward to it! There is, actually, evidence for Hephai...

Farriers

A little entertainment for a Sunday afternoon. This guy is a farrier who shoes horses and looks after their hooves. It just gives an indication of the differences in horses' temperaments, the bond Alexander and his cavalrymen must have had with their horses, and the work that goes into looking after...
