Thanks, Pauline. I've moved it to the other board. Any idea of the date?

Re: Hunting and archery

Hi, others are probably far more knowledgeable than me, but I would guess the following: aristocrats such as Alexander may have used bows and arrows to hunt fowl, but this would have been a diversion rather than a social statement hunting was an aristocratic activity. On the whole, there would have ...

Re: Alexander sacked the city of Baalbek?

I've done an online search through the Alexander sources and there is no mention of Baalbek. The only Heliopolis mentioned is the one in Egypt. I have no idea of the history of Baalbek, but maybe some destruction around the time of Alexander has been attributed to him. However, it doesn't seem to ha...

Re: Alexander sacked the city of Baalbek?

Hi, the name does seem like a spammer :) , but whatever we're grown ups. Where is the quote from? Heliopolis is in Egypt and would seem to mean in Greek 'city of the sun', the sort of name Alexander would give a city, but I don't think he sacked any cities in Egypt. Baalbek is in the Lebanon, so may...

Re: Historical inaccuracies

I would very much agree with what System1988 is saying. There are two issues here: the breaking of the reader's belief in the world the author is creating; and myth-making. The first is occasioned not just by the names used, but by authorial intrusion (telling us the meaning of Greek words), and wor...

Pella tombstone

I came across this tombstone from Pella in "Pella Alexander's the Great's Capital" by Photios Petsas 1978 IMG_3238a.jpg IMG_3241a.jpg "...of red paint are preserved. The form of the stele, the shape of the letters and the style of the relief date the inscription to the years around 300 BC." It is wo...

"The Lost Chronicles of Alexander"

by Steve E. Stylianos is supposedly a translation of Ptolemy's work on Alexander, interspersed with the 'translator' filling in the missing bits. There is little difference between the two styles, so not sure why he bothered. It's a harmless enough retelling of Alexander's life, although I am not su...

Purely out of interest in the size of the market out there, Jeanne, would you be able to say how many copies you have sold so far?

Re: Dancing with the Lion (novels on the young ATG)

At present, if you want the pretty Alex-Athenian-Agora model cover, that's available only for the ebook edition. If you want the statue edition, that's only in paperback. I'm trying to see if we can get that fixed so people can choose (especially for the paperback, as it's expensive, being a POD) w...

Re: Power causes Brain Damage?

The Indian 'mutiny' came on the back of a couple of very difficult years in Bactria, so maybe at that point Alexander did lose touch with his men. However, he must have won them back again viz the Opis 'mutiny' and the file past at his deathbed. They obviously adored him, and the point of the file p...

Re: phpBB updated

Thanks for updating the site, Thomas. I owe a huge apology to everyone for not completing the 'new' website. Work and life in general kept getting in the way. That, and trying to update and expand the content. Plus, I wasn't happy with the layout I had set up - it just didn't look professional enoug...
