Re: Pergamon Replica
In Greek museum shops they sell casts of the Pella head, Akropolis head, Olympia head, Pella statuette, the little heads from the tomb of Philip, the relief with Hephaistion. These don't appear to be available online, but courtesy of the wonderful system1988 I have just acquired full-sized replicas...

Re: Alexander exhibition in Oxford
Thank you, Amyntoros, that was very interesting. If Philip was at the fortress, a teenage Alexander might have been there learning to storm a fortress. Paralus, if you can't get to the exhibition, the accompanying book contains photos of many of the exhibits http://www.ashmolean.org/shop/index.php?c...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
No, it's a straightforward answer, just not one you like. The answer you'd like is: he could not possibly have been allowed to become king, had he been incompetent. Thus, the fact that he became king proves his competence. Q.E.D. Except...Macedonia produced many incompetent kings. And the history o...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
I just think it would be a wonderful thing if you, and others, would actually think about it. It's entirely understandable to you that someone can be interested in discussing a historical person they don't like. It's in Alexander's case, specifically , that you think it peculiar. It should be obvio...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
To me this is another peculiar question to ask. Why was he allowed to come to power in the first place if he was so incompetent? Really, ask yourself this: why are incompetent people regularly allowed to come to power? Why has this been the case throughout history? Clearly, people are pretty so-so ...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
As for the question, I have to say, I don't really think I have any obligation to justify my participation here. And I think it would be a good thing if you and bessusww, who asked the same question recently, would think about what it means that you ask this question. I don't believe for one moment...

Re: Philip II of Macedonia: Greater than Alexander
Accursed, I have to ask - you have such a low opinion of Alexander, why are you even interested in him? If you'll forgive me, some of your comments sound like sour grapes for a young man's success.

Re: birthday/deathday
Alexias, That's the same marble I was looking at as well, yours is a MUCH better image though. The image I was looking at seemed to be much more feminine, (looking more from his right side instead of straight on). Still looks very feminine but is more "other worldly", like you stated. Goo...

Re: About the King of Sidon
Could this perfume be why Alexander was reputed to smell sweetly (as well as the daily bath), instead of the slightly dubious mild diabetes theory? That theory never quite seemed to be compatible with his known physical endurance.

Re: birthday/deathday
Is the Apollo marble your speaking of the one where he has a lyre on his left and missing his right hand and forearm? If so, that is pretty interesting and I'm wondering if it was sculpted with these male and female features for a specific reason. I know he was the patron god of music, which explai...

I didn't know that about the perfume of cyprus and lilies - Abdaloymus must have retained his interest in gardening.

Re: birthday/deathday
I would suggest looking at some of the statues of Apollo, particularly the one in the British Museum that leads into the room with the Alexander head (and the Praxitiles' Lizard Apollo). The body may be masculine, but the hair and face is more than a little feminine, which slightly redresses the bal...

Dear Nicator, You have my apologies if I have offended you. However, I did not make any statements about your level of knowledge. I was attacking the logic, or illogic as I see it, of your statements. I am not going to bother responding to your points in detail because, frankly, I am not interested ...

Re: Artabazus, Parmenion, & Barsine...The Perfect Persian Pl
The assertion by Alexias that she would have been in Parmenion's care for a period of months was a surprise to me as well (I think several weeks, if I recall correctly). . I did not say ‘months’. I said ‘some time’ and I was deliberately vague because I have no idea how long it was before Parmenion...
