Re: J.R. Ellis Philip II and Macedonian Imperialism
Gnomon lists 26 items under his name: http://www.gnomon-online.de/hzeig.FAU?sid=8AF58B8E18&dm=1&ind=1&zeig=Ellis%2C+John+R. L'année philologique has 22 hits, and (ordered in descending chronological order) the first of these isn't included in Gnomon. I haven't compared the rest. It is pe...

http://www.archaeology.org/online/features/alexander/tomb.html try this link; it ought to calm your fears of conspiracy. The only foul play is the nonsense spoken by this damned woman. This is a good account indeed, but it is unfortunate that it starts with a few lines of nonsense: Alexan...

Re: The 311 peace treaty between the Diadochi
They worked with ambassadors indeed, and then oaths were sworn by all of the participating Diadochoi. The procedure is described in Antigonos' letter to the Skepsians reporting the peace. You can read a translation of it in this book, on p.8-9: http://books.google.be/books?id=sAbU7TxYoacC&prints...

Re: Ptolemy's army at Gaza
Diodorus 19.80.3- 84.8 will tell you all you need to know. If you interpret him correctly, that is. There is disagreement as to whether the "great number" of Egyptians were included in the 18,000 infantrymen. Most scholars assume they were not, but it seems more likely they were. I would ...

Unless I too need Paralus' glasses I read the name tag above 'OLYMPIAS' as OLYMPTH..the final letter is not iota, compare with the iota of PHIL.. Similarly above the snake bearing figure I read ...MPO.. whatever the last letter it too is not iota. Just a wild guess, but perhaps the name was written...

Re: Meeting of the Successors in Asia
Lane Fox seems to have exaggerated almost everything in his chapter on the Successors. That's all I have to add to what Paralus excellently said.Paralus wrote:Lane Fox, using “Asian Successors” and “discuss their differences” seems to have exaggerated the nature of the Macedonians gathered here.

That is the one and only source indeed. Alexion is otherwise unknown. It is often held that he belonged to the anti-Macedonian democratic party of Sikyon (see e.g. the following snippet at Google Books: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Ok5oAAAAMAAJ&dq=griffin+sikyon&q=alexion#search_anchor...

Re: Cleitarchus Reconstruction: Alexander in India
I would say that the usefulness is similar to the reconstruction of an ancient shattered vase If it was indeed similar to this, it would be useful to attempt such a reconstruction. Unfortunately it is rather like reconstructing an ancient shattered vase on the basis of a description of the few rema...

Re: Cleitarchus Reconstruction: Alexander in India
Congratulations on the publication of your new book. To be honest, I doubt the usefulness of such a reconstruction, given the nature of the evidence (excellently discussed by Bosworth at http://www.dur.ac.uk/Classics/histos/1997/bosworth.html ), but you must have learned a lot along the way, so I re...

Re: Need your opinions on adding Sub forums.
(Someone, please , tell me once and for all if there is a correct or academically approved spelling for Diodochi!) The Greek word for successor is diadochos, and its plural is Diadochoi; Diadochi is the latinized form. Both those spellings are correct, while Diodochoi is just a common typo (which d...

Re: King Antigonus
Perhaps to be called basileus you didn't have to specify the territory? Could it perhaps just be a kind of status symbol? Indeed, Hellenistic kings were simply king, and it did not really matter what they were king of, and it would seem that like the monarchs of the ancient near east they all consi...

Re: The Babylon Settlement
I'm afraid I mostly have questions, no real answers (and note that I'm still in the "war on Quellenforschung" mood). There seems nothing in these differences that cannot be explained in terms of Curtius’ shaping and Justin’s carelessness. We are asked to believe, however, that if these ‘di...

Written in Italian? Yes, it is written in Italian, but there are plans for an English translation. It might take years, of course, before that will actually be published. The plan is to produce a commentary on the whole Bibliotheca and if they will wait until the whole project is finished before th...
